Tapping Primal Emotions

I am going to talk about Gorilla Marketing today and I am going to cover just a huge range of things.  There’s a very important thing in advertising and marketing, which I would call the ‘Factor of Primal Emotions.’  You know people are driven and motivated by a lot of things and you can get very complicated and esoteric about what makes people tick but really, people are motivated by very simple core emotions. 

So here’s the latest issue of Cosmo.  Now, I want to explain the psychology of a Cosmo cover.  First of all, I want you to understand that more work goes into the cover of this magazine than anything that goes inside of it.  And this is one of the most exquisitely engineered pieces of marketing every single month and you can study it and you can learn from it. 

Now, what is right in the center of this magazine?  Don’t mince any words.  What is like right in the center of this magazine?

FEMALE:  Her chest?

A pair of tits!  Okay?  Now why are they there?  Because nobody cannot look at them, so that you will read the headlines that are next to them.  The very best advertising always appeals to primal motives.  That is driving everything that goes on in Marketing.  Now, it may be hidden or spun in a very delicate or genteel or friendly way, but still going after primal emotions.

You guys are going to get an assignment today.  And you’re going to have to go sell somebody on something.  And whether they act on you or not, if you can give them some – like really sophisticated thing that they think is a neat idea, they’re going to act on what you are trying to sell them, if and because you tap into primal emotions.  

Another big factor in Gorilla Marketing is the use of publicity.  Newspaper reporters, magazine reporters, somebody like that, they’re waiting and looking for interesting things to write about and talk about.  All you have to do is make what you do interesting and wrap a story around it and the reporter will do your publicity for you.

I am going to spend some time with you today - it will probably be different from the other presenters.  My goal isn’t as much to give you a list of top ten things you should be doing to grow your business as much as it is to give you some ideas about your approach – the way you approach instead of the details.  What kind of attitude do you bring to the table every morning when you wake up; what kind of attitude do you need to have at midnight or two o’clock in the morning, when that idea comes to you and you know it’s bigger than life…how do you execute on that?

So I’d like everybody to stand up to start.  This is one of the things we do at Pepperjam.  The idea is to infuse energy into the office.  So sometimes when I come in to my executive office every morning and I see somebody sulking, I say, “Alright, let’s go!”  So we start clapping [claps] then we go “Oooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwww!” [while clapping faster and faster],  and then we just start the day out.  And that’s just a sign of just busting through whatever’s going to come through the day. 

I may actually have you do that throughout the day.  And if you’re feeling sort of low energy, you’re feeling that, you know… just get up and do it!  I do it alone a lot.  It doesn’t have to be that, but anything that you could do to put yourself in the state that you need to be in on a daily basis to be successful…

Three things that I want you to present everyday, in every thing you do, are confidence, cockiness – and I use the word ‘cockiness’ specifically, I don’t want you to be cocky but I want you to be so damn confident that it’s almost over the top, but not cocky.  And the third thing is the right attitude.  I don’t want you to believe that positive thinking is going to make you a million dollars.  Bullshit, right?  You have to have a positive attitude.  Listen, that’s a requisite to being able to get to the kind of energy level that you are going to need to have early in the morning, late at night, if you want to be successful.

When you approach anything in life – taking a shower, [bleeped out of video], your experience will be different.  Your experience will be different if you approach it with absolute certainty.  If you approach your business or an idea with the attitude that failure is the greatest opportunity that you could ever have… failure, you know what failure is?  Most people live their life trying to avoid failure.  That’s a bunch of bull****.  Failure is an opportunity not for you to do it again.  Especially with your business, it’s an opportunity not to do the same silly thing you did last time.

So for every reason under the sun, we are all positioned to take internet marketing to the next level and to make as much money as you want… but do it with the right attitude and remember, make sure, that you approach everything else that relates to your business, your personal life, everything else, with absolute certainty.  Life would be more fun and more meaningful…

Here’s what we are going to cover:  Viral Marketing – How to Create Attention.  Viral marketing is really just a form of word-of-mouth marketing on steroid.  And when I started getting into viral marketing, that’s when I started going from 40, 50, 60 opt-in members a day up to 200, 300, 400, 500, and now, over a thousand opt-in members per day coming through the network and sites that we have, primarily with the sue of viral marketing.

How to Build Your Business Faster

Today I thought we’d talk a little bit about how to make money faster.  Some people have a problem because they’re going after a really big hit but they just never even get in the game.  The purpose of the business is to make money now and in the future.  The trick is, how do you get to be faster? 

So it’s not just about money, it’s also this time element.  You know what, if you’re growing fast and you’re making tons of money coming in, you’re going to be losing money all over the place – inefficiencies here and there, and stuff will slip out all over the place… but you can always get the money back.  You can always get the money back.  Time, if you waste it, it’s just gone. 

One of the ways to know, if you’re thinking in the right direction is – ‘Are you doing something?’  And I would say, if you’re doing something you’re good at that’s probably bad, if you’re doing something anyway, that’s sub-optimal. 

Generally speaking, the less you do, the more you make.  The less you do, the more you make… what does that mean? 

So here are all the things you have to get done in your business, and if you’re the only person in your business - you have to do it all - you can get a certain amount of things done.  If this is your slice, but this is your business, the less you’re doing of everything that has to get done, the more you can make.

And so if you want to build a business, you need some skills, you need some understanding about internet marketing – all these different things – product development, whatever, but if you want to build a business, it’s about leverage.  If you want to build a bigger business, it’s you not doing it.

Four Part Ad Formula

This is going to be the most important section of my presentation.  This is the part that you really need to pay the most attention to and it’s the part where if you get everything else wrong, then this part right, then you can still succeed.

This is the simple 4-part ad formula.  If you’re under a time crunch, and you’ve got to create an ad fast that will get results, and the future of your online business depends on how good that ad is, here is the 4-part formula that can simplify it:

Part 1.  Here’s what I’m Selling.  That’s it.  Here’s what you can phrase it that way; you can start your copy by saying, “Here’s what I have to offer you today.”  And then just describe what it is.  That leads to part two.

Part 2.  Here’s Why It’s Right For You
“Here’s what I’m selling.” 
“Here’s why it’s right for you.”
“Here are some questions you might have.”  You could cal it Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

And here’s what you need to do right now.  Can you see how you can write an ad just based on that? 
“Click the button below.  Make sure you put in your correct credit card information and let us rush your shipment to you right now.” 
This is the essence of writing good copy.

Good copy does not just come out of your head; it comes out of the mouth of your prospects.  So if you are going to use the 4-part ad formula to create your copy, then here’s what you must do if you want maximum success… I didn’t say should do, I didn’t say it would be a good idea to do, I said, ‘this is what you MUST do if you want to create the maximum effectiveness in your ad - - Find Your Prospects… whether you find them in online forms, whether you find them through surveys, whether you find them because you bought a list from a direct-mail list broker, whether you find them because you just went out the streets and talking to people.  Find out where they hang out, go meet them where they hang out, and listen to them.  Engage them in a conversation and really listen.  This is a lost art – listening.  So you need to listen to them, you need to get their language – what words and phrases do they sue to describe their pain, their frustration, their hot buttons, the things they like, things they don’t like… I mean, get their specific words, because nothing is more powerful than reflecting back their words to them, reflecting back their problems in their own language.  That’s how you get that rapport.  That’s how you join the conversation that’s already taking place in their head.  You don’t have to be a mind reader, you just have to ask…and listen. 

And then write your sales letter, write your sales copy.  And if you do these things, you can turn those words into wealth because you can get them to take the action that you want them to take and buy from you.
